VMWare Workstation 5.5.3 for ("experimental support") Vista

Just after few days after Vista went RTM, VMWare released a minor update to its Workstation 5.5 product. For me, the most important feature is (experimental) Vista support - both host and guest. How can one live without VMWare Workstation?

So, another obstacle for Vista adoption is removed.

That's not new, some older version support Vista even.

AFAIK there were problems (specially host) and Vista RTM wasn't out there. So I guess it should work better now :-)

5.5.3 does not work with my Vista Ultimate. When I fire up any vmware image in the workstation, hangs my computer and I have to hard boot.

Hi Roger,

It works for me (minus accessing files on network drives). Did you try turning off UAC?

Yes I have tried it with UAC off, and also unintalled/reinstalled the VMWARE but no dice. Once it hangs, if I just leave it eventually I get a blue screen. But, perhaps I should not be surprised since VMware does show a warning that Vista is not supported as a host OS.

Yes, the version has an experimental support for Vista. I guess you'll have to wait for official support or take a look at VMWare forums.

Recently I read that one of the new features of VMware Workstation 5.5.3 is that it has better support for Windows Vista. It is still experimental, though. Since I am testing Vista mostly in a virtual environment, I was curious to know, if all t...

In the guest, it's not new. I have 5.5.2 and Vista works, albeit slowly(just the fact it loads my pc running within the VM, not VMWare's fault) as to host, I cannot comment except I'd like to see more comments for the verdict. 5.5.3 claims experimental Ubuntu 6.10 support but 5.5.2 works just fine with Kubuntu 6.10(same thing but with KDE) once you figure out the complicated task and force installing VMWare Tools. Can anyone tell me what's new here before I take the plunge? Comments from anyone who has used both versions is appreciated.
